Previewing the Sacramento Kings 2011-12 Rookies:…

The Sacramento Kings have been attempting to rebuild the team through the draft for the last several years. Coach Paul Westphal is not afraid to play several players and mix up his rotations. This could give any of the rookies an ample chance to prove what they can do in the upcoming season. This season the Kings drafted three rookies that should play important roles in the future of the team.

Jimmer Fredette(notes)

Jimmer might be the biggest name in the 2011 draft and one of the most NBA ready players in the rookie class. In his final season at BYU, Fredette averaged 28.9 points per game and 4.3 assists per game. He also made 3.5 three point baskets per game. Fredette was simply amazing in his final collegiate season and was a threat anytime he touched the ball. Jimmer will likely play a combo point/shooting guard position along with Tyreke Evans(notes) for the Kings. The fact is that while he is a liability defensively, Jimmer will always be a major offensive threat. His range extends far beyond the three point line and he will instantly be one of the best shooters in the NBA. I have high expectations for Jimmer this upcoming season and am looking forward to seeing him play in Sacramento.

Tyler Honeycutt(notes)

The Kings selected Honeycutt early in the second round and could have a very good prospect at small forward for the future. Honeycutt averaged 12.8 points, 7.2 rebounds, 2.1 blocks and made 1.7 three pointers per game at UCLA last season. Honeycutt will need to add some bulk but is a young player and has a lot of potential. Fans shouldn’t expect much in his rookie season but Honeycutt has a bright future if he continues to develop.

Isaiah Thomas(notes)

Thomas played well throughout his collegiate career at Washington. He averaged 16.8 points and 6.1 assists per game last season at Washington. At just 5-foot-9-inches, he will be limited by his height in the NBA but is a good scorer and playmaker. Thomas should see time at backup point guard off the bench behind Fredette and Tyreke Evans. I think Thomas will definitely make the team and could even see playing time this season.

Jimmer’s NBA expectations

08:09 AM ET 08.25 | Jimmer Fredette understands if you doubt him. Taken 10th by the Sacramento Kings, Fredette will likely face more pressure than any other rookie — even No. 1 pick Kyrie Irving. He understands why. “The biggest thing is that people want to see how I translate to the NBA game,” Fredette told Yahoo! Sports. “There are a lot of question marks out there. There are a lot of guys who don’t think I can play at this level and I won’t be able to dominate as well as the college level. I’m not expecting to do that at the NBA level right away anyway. … Fredette, 22, has received some offers to play overseas, but said he’s not entertaining them. He is working out primarily at BYU waiting anxiously for the lockout to end.
