NBA Free Agency: Samuel Dalembert Expects To…

Read More: Samuel Dalembert (C – SAC), Chuck Hayes (C – SAC), Jason Thompson (F – SAC), J.J. Hickson (F – SAC), DeMarcus Cousins (C – SAC), Sacramento Kings

It has been a tumultuous last few days for the Sacramento Kings after learning of recently-signed Chuck Hayes’ heart condition that led to a voided contract, but the team may be on the verge of re-signing Samuel Dalembert. Once believed to have moved on from the defensive specialist with the signing of Hayes, recent events have led to the Kings working closer to a deal with Dalembert. Chris Tomasson of FOX Sports has the update:

“If things work out, everything structurally (with the contact), it will be Sacramento,” Dalembert said in a phone interview with FOX Sports Florida from his Boca Raton, Fla., home. “It’s close.”

“There are no hard feelings (after not originally being wanted by Sacramento),” said Dalembert. “I think we can do something exciting. Last season, it seemed we were getting the excitement back in the city.”

Dalembert has reportedly been working towards a one or two-year deal, which would work out financially for the Kings as well. Should the veteran center join Sacramento, he would be the fourth piece of a solid front court including DeMarcus Cousins, Jason Thompson and J.J. Hickson. The Kings struggled defending the paint last season and the re-signing of Dalembert should help greatly.

SACRAMENTO—

Even though it may be a long time before we see NBA basketball again, The Sacramento Kings staff continues to prep for whenever the season does begin.

Tuesday, President of Basketball Operations Geoff Petrie announced two new members on Head Coach Westphal’s staff. Keith Smart and former Sacramento King Bobby Jackson have been hired as assistant coaches.

Bobby Jackson spent 12 years playing in the NBA, the last six years of his career with the Kings. His best season was in 2002-03, when he earned the NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award. The past two years, Jackson has assisted the Kings’ as a basketball operations special assistant.

Keith Smart played and coached in the NBA for over 20 years, but he’s best known for making the winning shot in the 1987 NCAA Championship as an Indiana Hoosier beating Syracuse. Smart has also spent time as head coach of both the Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors.

Additionally the Kings hired Dwayne Wilson to be equipment manager, and two staff members received promotions. Manny Romero will now work as the Kings Head Athletic Trainer and Pete Youngman is now the Kings Director of Sports Medicine.

The Sacramento Kings have hired former players Keith Smart and Bobby Jackson as assistant coaches on Paul Westphal’s staff. Smart, a standout at Indiana University, coached the Golden State Warriors last season but was not retained after the team went 36-46 in his lone year. He had replaced the league’s all-time career wins leader Don Nelson. Jackson played 12 seasons in the NBA and spent the past two years as the Kings’ basketball operations special assistant. The Kings went 24-58 last season, missing the playoffs for the fifth consecutive year.

Sacramento Kings New Arena: Potential New Complex…
Gavin Maloof is looking to keep the Sacramento Kings in the city.

Gavin Maloof is looking to keep the Sacramento Kings in the city.

The Sacramento Kings’ new AEG Sports Complex Arena faces a key vote in the Sacramento City Council on Tuesday that could determine whether the team stays in Sacramento or moves down south to Anaheim.

According to The Los Angeles Times, the Sacramento City Council will vote Tuesday on two measures that could determine whether the Kings stay in the city. The Times says the proposed arena, a sports and entertainment complex which has received financing interest from Anschutz Entertainment Group, would cost about $387 million.

It’s a shift for the franchise from as recently as May, and it gives fans of the franchise some hope. In early May, it appeared almost certain the Kings would head to Anaheim after the 2011-12 season, but owners Joe and Gavin Maloof had expressed their determination to keep the team in Sacramento.

“We have respect for the community,” George Maloof, a partner with his brothers, told The Times in May. “… We’re going in with blind faith.”

Last Friday, the Sacramento Bee reported that AEG had expressed interest in providing “assistance” to Sacramento mayor Kevin Johnson and the Think Big Sacramento Coalition in building a new arena in the city.

The breakdown, according to NBC: On Tuesday, the council will decide whether to approve, table or reject $550,000 in spending for lawyers and consultants to “vet the project” and negotiate a proposed arena with the NBA and the Maloofs. It would make sense, then, that if there was opposition among the council, the project would be shelved in the first step rather than wasting $550,000.

If that is approved, negotiations ensue to determine how much private and public funding will split up the project, according to NBC.

Of course, the project still has a long way to go. Anaheim has the NBA-ready Honda Center, where the Kings would share an arena with the NHL’s Anaheim Ducks. And Las Vegas, which has been yearning for a professional sports team, was mentioned as a possible relocation destination earlier this year. Those rumors seemed to fizzle, though, and Anaheim became the most likely spot.

The Sacramento mayor Johnson has a vested interest in keeping the Kings around. A 14-year NBA veteran, he likely does not want to lose the city’s only professional team under his watch.

That’s all for today guys, i’ll be back to blog you tomorrow.
